Net Minus: Enabling the Offshore Energy Transition

DTU Offshore – the Danish Offshore Technology Centre, based at the Technical University of Denmark – was founded to drive the technology needed to help Denmark become more self-reliant in its energy needs. Since 2019, DTU Offshore is using its expertise to enable the energy transition Denmark – and the world – in a tech push towards net zero carbon emissions and zero discharge of harmful substances into the marine environment.

Partnering with other research institutions around the world, and the industry who will be able to implement these technologies, often at the very same platforms that were previously extracting oil and gas, DTU Offshore is focused on a number of essential research areas, from carbon storage to waste water management.

For 50 years, Denmark has relied on a rich source of oil and gas in the North Sea for much of its energy needs. Now though, with fields getting depleted and the government aiming to stop oil and gas production by 2050, the resources and expertise behind this extraction are being put to completely different use.

In unique labs which combine both sophisticated chemical labs, as well as facilities for investigating core flooding, researchers are looking at the optimization and safety of carbon storage, looking at waste water management, and developing the monitoring technologies for industrial scale application – the same areas of expertise that the group has excelled in for many years, now applied in a different way.

The monitoring technologies can detect potential leaks of CO2 and monitor the marine environment, thus they are key to developing safe and viable solutions for the future.

At the same time, the DTU Offshore team is working with its partners to ensure this work doesn’t just remain in the lab, but that it makes its way to industry and into practice as soon as it’s ready. With these approaches, the expectation is that Denmark not only achieves net zero, but net minus in terms of CO2 as well as achieving zero discharge of harmful substances into the marine environment. This helps the rest of the world get closer to its overall goal, a safer future for all.
