QZabre: Quantum Scanning Microscopy
QZabre is a spin-off from one of the leading research groups working on scanning NV magnetometry. Founded in 2018, we are now about 10 people, mainly technical/scientific, who enjoy making high-end, complex scientific instruments as well as state-of-the-art diamond scanning probes.
The nanometer scale is the place to be for more applied research. While we can image and analyse the surface, there is still a lot that is inaccessible, such as magnetic fields, currents, electric fields, noise.
NV microscopy is a recent development that significantly extends our toolbox. Originally developed for magnetic imaging, proper “qubit” manipulation enables a wide range of measurements.
It utilizes a single atomic defect in a diamond as a “sensor”, which is scanned over the surface at nm proximity, creating a spatial resolution at the nm scale. By running different protocols, it can be used to detect a wide range of parameters.
One of the pioneers is Prof. Degen, who already envisioned such a system in 2008. A large community worked to get this running, with the Degen group at the forefront. The key component, the scanning tip, turned out to have a large demand, leading to a spin-off with a focus on probes. This was expanded to full systems.
The spin-off has been able to miniaturise a setup that was an optical table to a small 30 cm by 30 cm box, creating more of a tabletop instrument, which improves on the original by a factor of 2 or more insensitivity. The company is dedicated to improving performance and making complex measurements as easy and accessible as possible.
