Strat Whammy Bar Spring Removal and Arm Replacement Tips and Tricks
In this video, I give you good tips on how to remove an old tension spring and how to repair the 10-32 UNF block threads that may have been damaged from the tension spring installation. It's almost a must to get the 10-32 UNF internal thread bottom tap (link below) to keep around for all whammy bar work. Craig at Overdrive Custom Guitar Works has a great website with all types of information about different whammy bars and how they should be installed. They recommend screwing in the bar at least 6-8 turns after the threads reach the top of the bridge plate to keep the bar from breaking prematurely. I was able to go 11 turns after I cleaned out the damaged threads with the thread tap. You will also need to get the Rapid Tap oil. Get both from McMaster-Carr.

UPDATE: I ended up using a new tension spring anyway because the arm was too loose. I was able to get 9 turns into the block and could have gone more but that was good. On Earth Blues at the end, you need the whammy bar to stay in place so you can vibrate the chords quickly. You can't do it if the bar drops down every time.
