Restoring an Original Sound City "Made in Italy" (Dallas Arbiter) Fuzz Wah Face - Before and After
I restored an original circa. 1970 Dallas Arbiter (London, England) Fuzz Wah Face that was made in Italy. The "before" sound has a lot of scratchiness that I attribute to some leaky caps. DC voltage will make a potentiometer scratchy sounding. The good thing is the pot is in good shape. This one has the Fasel "red" 500 mH inductor.
I'm super excited about the results. The wah-wah has that classic sound that is almost better than my Clyde clone. So simple of a design but the original parts do make a difference in the sound, especially the pot and the inductor. This thing is in great shape now. The pot has the short sweep that I love.
I had to replace approximately 10-12 parts. I bought a couple of the .22 uF caps for the wah section but left the originals in because they seemed fine. I ordered all of the parts from Mouser. I also adjusted the treadle (lever that turns the pot gear, pronounced "tredle") so the pot would be just about maxed out on the treble side when you push the on/off switch. I need to replace the rubber pads so that it is not so easy to hit the switch when you go to full treble.
"After" demo starts at 3:12
P.S. This fuzz/wah was given to me several years ago by my best friend before he passed away. It's been sitting around for years waiting for me to figure out how to restore it.
Corrections: Treadle is pronounced "tredle." I meant to say silicon instead of silicone.
