2021 Infrastructure Bill of $1.2T Dollars (D.O.T. to Grow by Over 50%) Top Paying Loads in Trucking

The $1.2T Dollar 2021 Infrastructure Bill has passed and will without a doubt affect every truck driver in America. The Department of Transportation will be hiring many new team members to make sure the new influx of money isn't mismanaged, defrauded, and there is no frivolous spending.

The D.O.T. will receive an additional $50B in a budget increase and will basically grow by over 50%. This would be the largest infrastructure investment since the creation of the U.S. Interstate Highway System and is definitely overdue considering our crumbling infrastructure that is in dire need of repair.

The DOT will be focusing on repairing and modernizing or roads, bridges, tollways, as well as our highway and transit systems. This will be a very large, ongoing project covering the entire United States so expect days and consider additional route planning.

Something that piqued my interest was a clause in this 2021 infrastructure bill where money is allocated for tens of thousands of EV charging stations all over the country. Why this is interesting is because generally this is the sole responsibility of EV auto manufacturers like Tesla, Rivian, and Lucid but in this case, the $1.2T Dollar infrastructure bill pays for it using taxpayer dollars. In my mind this is pushing the consumer to buy more electric vehicles and ultimately may be seen as unfair for those taxpayers who don't own electric vehicles yet are basically paying for the electric chargers.

The DOT currently has a budget of $90B dollars which will grow to nearly $140B. Plus the infrastructure bill contains $550B dollars of new spending money which will be spent on fixing 10 of our Nation's "Economically Significant" bridges as well as 15,000 smaller bridges nationwide. The I-40 Bridge in TN and the West Seattle Bridge in Washington will also be fixed.

It's important to keep in mind that portions of the interstate will be dismantled and in many cases will not be reconnected. This has a lot of different people and trucking associations up in arms as it will create all sorts of issues for truckers everywhere. Definitely consider doing more truck route planning, especially if you're on a tight schedule or are short on your Hours of Service.

Additional money has been allocated as part of the total infrastructure bill spending on urban neighborhood road and transit improvements seeking to reconnect previously disconnected communities. Ultimately, expect changes to begin starting over the next six months and for construction to continue for years to come.
