How Truck Drivers Will Benefit From This Railroad Strike in 2022/2023

The 2022 Railroad Strike can only be helped by truck drivers. The trucking industry would have to step in and unfortunately it would still not be enough. There is definitely good news for truckers everywhere but only if the strike moves forward and the temporary measures are halted.

This railroad strike was scheduled for this Friday September 16th, 2022 but the Biden Administration intervened. We don't know yet if the measures will stick or not so ultimately, if the railroad strike 2022 happens, then we could be looking at significant upheaval as a country.

Over 40% of all U.S. Long-Distance freight is moved over rail. That's a lot of freight, especially when you consider that a truckload hauled by a semi truck is equal to 25% of one train car. That means we'd need a huge amount of semi trucks to help solve this problem. In fact, it'd be a truly horrific event if it lasted just one week but if a railroad strike was to happen, it would likely last way longer than that.

The problem is that the rail companies and the 12 rail unions have to agree on something in order for the strike to not move forward. The railroad workers are arguing for higher wages and a better quality of life, among other things. At the end of the day a National rail shut down could cost over $2B dollars per day and require nearly 500,000 additional long-haul trucks every single day.

The truck freight spot market has fallen for 8 months straight now and this is RFP season, holiday shopping season, and consumer spending is hitting new lows every month. So what can truckers expect should railroad strike 2022 be a real issue America would have to contend with.

It would be mainly dry vans that would benefit from this but much of the freight could also be moved using flatbed trailers and even reefers. Paper, grain, stone, clay, glass, gravel, chemicals, petroleum products, metals, lumber, and other wood products can be in high demand.
