Republicans trying to 'manage expectations' about Biden's debating skills

US contributor Cameron Stewart says the Republicans are trying to manage expectations by portraying Joe Biden as a good debater, in the hope he will underwhelm during the debates.

“There’s been a lot of concern in the Republican camp,” Mr Stewart told Sky News.

“Donald Trump has been very successful in portraying Biden as semi-senile and unable to string a sentence together.

“And they (Republicans) are concerned that the expectations may be so low for Biden that Biden might just put in a very competent or even just average performance ands still be very much seen as the winner.

“So what you have been seeing in the last 48 hours in the states is the Trump campaign actually saying Biden is a good performer and debater, he will be a formidable opponent on the debate stage.

“They’re trying to manage the expectations, so it doesn’t look as if an average performance by Joe Biden is going to seem as the winner.”

The first debate is set for September 29 in Cleveland, Ohio.
