Alex Ovechkin Outdoor Game Highlights

January 1, 2011 - @ Penguins, Heinz Field, Pittsburgh, PA - 0:00

Ovechkin's outdoor debut was a much-hyped showdown in Pittsburgh against the rival Penguins. Rain delayed the start time from 1pm to 8pm, and even fell at times during the game. Although Ovechkin did not record a point in the game, he still made his presence felt with a big hit on his first shift and several chances throughout the game, and the Capitals took the game 3-1. The game proved that the rivalry was still in full swing as the two teams did not shake hands after the game, becoming the first and one of only a few teams to not shake hands after an outdoor game.

January 1, 2015 - vs. Blackhawks, Nationals Park, Washington, DC - 8:04

4 years later, Ovechkin would play his first outdoor game at home. This time the opponent would be the Chicago Blackhawks, who we now know basically play outdoors every year. Ovechkin would score his first ever outdoor NHL goal in the first period, and picked up his first outdoor assist with 12.9 seconds to go on Troy Brouwer's game-winning goal. If not for a couple of posts, he may have even scored a hat trick, but another win was enough to make the day a memorable one.

March 3, 2018 - vs. Maple Leafs, Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium, Annapolis, MD - 16:29

After two Winter Classic appearances, Ovechkin got a chance to play his first Stadium Series game. It was an important game for both Ovechkin and the Capitals. Ovechkin was looking to record his 9th 40-goal season and move closer to 600 goals, while the Capitals were looking to turn things around from a bad-but-not-terrible 6-6-2 stretch over their previous 14 games. The Capitals comfortably won 5-2, and the victory could be seen as a turning point that season, as after the game the Capitals finished the regular season on a 12-5-0 run. We all know what happened next.
