Ovechkin Scores 1,000th Point (1/11/2017)

January 11, 2017 - 2 nights after a 3-point game in which Ovechkin tied Maurice "Rocket" Richard with 544 career goals, Ovechkin came into a Wednesday night matchup with the rival Penguins looking to hit an even bigger milestone. Sitting at 999 career points, Ovechkin looked to join the exclusive 1,000 point club. Clearly, he did not want to waste any time as he scored just 35 seconds into the game on the Capitals' first shot. With the goal, Ovechkin became the first player in Capitals franchise history to score 1,000 points with the team. He was the 84th player to score 1,000 points, the 37th to score 1,000 with one franchise, and in 880 games was the 24th fastest (now 26th - Crosby 757, Malkin - 848) player to reach the milestone. He also became just the 4th Russian-born player to score 1,000 points (since then Malkin has become the 5th). Ovechkin added another goal on the powerplay in the 2nd period with (at least in my opinion) one of the best one-timers of his career to help the Caps to a 5-2 win. The celebration may have lacked in comparison to some of his goal milestones since there was no full team celebration on the ice, but it still remains one of the biggest achievements a player can reach in the NHL. At least it wasn't some secondary assist off his butt, eh?
