"Snowvechkin" - Part 1 (2/7/2010)
February 7, 2010 - Crosby vs. Ovechkin. It's the defining rivalry of the last two decades of NHL hockey. In May 2009 the two clashed in a thrilling playoff series where both players scored 8 goals including dueling hat tricks in game 2 of the series. While that game deservedly gets all the hype, a regular season matchup 9 months later offered similar drama. The Capitals were riding a franchise-record 13-game winning streak heading into a Super Bowl Sunday matinee against the defending champion Penguins, with the game being broadcast nationwide as NBC's Game of the Week. Both superstars were fighting for position as the NHL's leading goal scorer with Ovechkin leading at 39 and Crosby not far behind at 37. Two early goals by Crosby put the Penguins up 2-0. Ovechkin got the Caps on the board with his 40th of the season to cut the deficit to one, but two goals from Jordan Staal gave the Penguins a 4-1 lead late in the 2nd period. However, Eric Fehr would cut the lead to 4-2 before the second intermission which set the stage for one of Ovechkin's greatest performances. The Great 8 took over, scoring two goals to complete his 9th career hat trick and tie the game 4-4. On a powerplay in overtime, Ovechkin assisted on Mike Knuble's game-winning goal to cap off the comeback for the team's 14th win in a row.
Of course, one couldn't forget the massive snowstorm that dumped 32 inches of snow on the DC area in the days before. Combined with the comeback and the hat trick, many Capitals fans simply remember this as the "Snowvechkin" game, arguably the most memorable regular season tilt of the Ovechkin era.
