Ovechkin Sets Single Season Left Wing Goals Record (4/3/2008)

April 3, 2008 - As the 2007-08 regular season wound down, the Caps found themselves fighting for a playoff spot. Despite a terrible 6-14-1 start, the Capitals had rallied thanks to a coaching change and several breakout performances - none bigger than Alex Ovechkin. After compiling 98 goals and 198 points in his first two seasons, Ovechkin found yet another gear in his 3rd season, becoming the first player in 12 years to score 60 goals in a season and leading the league in points. Heading into his 81st game of the season, he had already amassed 63 goals - the most ever by a Capital and tied for the most ever by a left wing. The Capitals went down 1-0 in the first minute but with the season on the line the Great 8 rallied the team, tying the game in the first period with his 64th goal, passing Luc Robitaille (63 in 1992-93) for the most ever in a season by a left winger. In the third, Ovechkin put the Caps up for good with his 65th goal to lead them to the crucial victory. While he wouldn't score again in the final game of the season, performances like this one cemented his first career MVP season as the Capitals entered an era of regular playoff appearances.
