Roy Woods on Changing his Sound, PARTYNEXTDOOR, Exis (FaceTime Interview)

In this new FaceTime interview, we spoke to Brampton native, r&b singer, and OVO signee, Roy Woods. Roy Woods has been on my radar/playlist for years now. I started listening to him when his debut project, “Exis” released on SoundCloud, with songs like “Go Go Go”, “Drama” ft Drake, and “Jealousy”. Ever since then, I’ve been tuning into his other projects like Waking at Dawn, Nocturnal, and most recently, his Dem Times EP. In this interview, we talked about what it was like adapting his core sound that he originated, to the sound of the new generation of r&b/hip hop. He spoke on why he embraces the use of autotune now, and how he definitely does listen to the feedback his fans have had to say about it, good and bad. We also talked about what it’s like being in Brampton and if he watched any YouTubers from there during his childhood, such as JusReign, or even Lilly Singh, aka SuperWoman. Roy also explains why if he could listen to only ONE artist in the world, it’d be his label mate, PARTYNEXTDOOR. He explains being a fan of him before even signing to OVO, and finally getting the chance to meet everyone (including Drake and Majid Jordan), at the “Energy” music video shoot. Other topics discussed were what is currently on his playlist (Lil Keed, Gunna, Moneybagg Yo), and he gives us an update on his next full length album, explaining that he went back to listen to his old projects to get influence.
