In this interview, Arshan speaks with 18-year-old rapper Yung Kayo. Kayo is the youngest artist signed to Young Thug’s Young Stoner Life (YSL) record label, and we were lucky to catch up with him at James Oro during our recent trip to LA. Kayo is featured on “Proud of You” with Young Thug and Lil Uzi Vert, which currently has over 22 million plays on Spotify alone, and he recently dropped his debut album, DFTK (“Down for the kount”). During their conversation, Yung Kayo talks about his morning routine and waking up early, before talking about how he’s inspired by singers like Lana Del Ray. He talks about growing up in DMV, still attending school, making music in the Apple Store at 11 years old, and the influence Travis Scott has had on his sound. Kayo talks about listening to Future and Chief Keef, before mentioning that he really wants to work with Dej Loaf.
Arshan and Kayo then talk about the importance of beat selection in rap, as well as how Young Thug inspired a generation. Kayo explains that he doesn’t sound like Thug or other members of YSL because he’s from the DMV and not Atlanta. Kayo then compares himself and Young Thug to NBA players, saying him and Thug are like Lebron and Jordan. He then lists the video games he enjoys playing, including Madden, Call of Duty, Little Big Planet, NBA Street, NBA2k, and Skate. Kayo then talks about recording with Thug’s engineer, Bainz, before describing Young Thug’s strong work ethic in the studio. They shift the conversation to talking about TV shows Kayo watches, including Euphoria & 3%, before mentioning that he’d want one of his songs to be in a Rob Dyrdek MTV show. Kayo describes his relationship with rappers signed to Opium, like Ken Carson and Destroy Lonely, and talks about working with Babyxsosa. He then talks about linking with Yeat for the first time, recording “Narcoticz”, and how Yeat is underrated as a recording engineer. He describes modeling in fashion shows at 15, styling himself, wearing Rick Owens since 6th grade, and whether or not he’s worked with Carti. Kayo then gives Arshan fashion advice before giving advice to anyone feeling unmotivated. Kids Take Over is based in Vancouver, Canada.
