In this interview, Arshan speaks with Jamaican-American rapper, singer, songwriter, and producer, BEAM, during a previous KTO trip to LA. BEAM is the son of dancehall and gospel reggae singer Papa San, and was also half of the production duo 808&Elite. In 2021, BEAM featured on Justin Bieber’s “Love You Different”, which currently has over 70 million streams on Spotify alone. He released his debut studio album, ALIEN, in February 2022, featuring collaborations with Justin Bieber, Jorja Smith, and his father, among others.
During their conversation, BEAM talks about getting his laptop stolen and losing songs before recording his album 95 in just a week. He describes growing up poor in Jamaica but then living a wealthier lifestyle because of his father’s success. He talks about being inspired by his father to start producing music at age 10, doing Christian hip-hop, getting placements with Yo Gotti & 2Chainz, and mentions how CardoGotWings is the most underrated producer. BEAM says he’s inspired by early Frank Ocean, Travis Scott, & Future, before Arshan recognizes BEAM’s Tiny Desk performance as one of the best.
BEAM then talks about working with Kanye West on DONDA, meeting Kanye for the first time, amazing songs getting left off the album, and having a falling out before the album finished. He talks about collaborating with KayCyy, Kanye’s advice for him, and how Skrillex introduced him to Justin Bieber. He describes meeting Justin for the first time, crying when he heard Justin’s feature on “SUNDOWN”, and not being able to relisten to his own work because he’s self-critical. They end their conversation with BEAM describing how the making of his song “2ND SAMUEL” was very emotional, before showing appreciation to YouTuber Patrick CC and acknowledging the importance of showing support to those who support you.
