Hon. James L. Oberstar - Sunrise Arrival in Duluth, Unloading in Superior
Here is the 806-foot Hon. James L. Oberstar arriving in Duluth, Minnesota on the morning of August 18, 2020. She was hauling a load of limestone to be deposited at the Graymont facility in Superior, Wisconsin. After unloading, she would then move to the Canadian National dock in Duluth for a load of iron ore.
The Oberstar has spent much of 2020 in layup as the economy slowed down. She made her last run in the spring on May 13, after picking up iron ore in Duluth. That departure was covered in an earlier video on this channel. The August 18 run to Duluth was her first trip since coming out of a three-month layup. As the Oberstar reach the Duluth piers, the sun appeared above the horizon, perhaps symbolically signalling a new start to the Oberstar's season. The Oberstar then treated us to a very loud salute as she passed through the canal. Note that her self-unloading boom has been lifted off the deck, so the deck crane could start removing hatches from the cargo holds.
Following the Oberstar's passage through the shipping canal, I grabbed some additional footage along Park Point, watching from across the bay as the Oberstar make her way to the Graymont facility in Superior. A couple of hours later, I then stopped outside of Graymont and captured some footage of the Oberstar unloading. If you wish to skip directly to the unloading, go to 8:40 in the video. The Oberstar has a 250-foot self-unloading boom, which helps to deposit her cargo on the already-large stack of limestone that was at Graymont. It's hard to convey in this video just how massive the pile of limestone is at Graymont. But perhaps seeing the bulldozer on the pile gives a better idea of the overall scale.
