What is a distal biceps rupture?

A distal biceps rupture is a tear of the tendon attachment of the biceps muscle at the elbow. It is most common in men in their fifties, and usually results from an acute traumatic event such as the arm giving out while lifting weights or lifting heavy furniture. Older, less active patients can often do well without surgery, while younger, more active patients usually require surgery to reattach the tendon and restore strength of the arm.
