Mercedes GLE vs BMW X5 vs Volkswagen Touareg

The new #Mercedes-Benz #GLE has a wealth of innovations. For example, the active suspension system E-ACTIVE BODY CONTROL on a 48-volt basis is a world first. While the driving assistance systems take another step forward with Active Stop-and-Go Assist. The interior is even more spacious and comfortable, with a third seat row available on request. The infotainment system has larger screens, a full-colour head-up display with a resolution of 720 x 240 pixels and the MBUX Interior Assistant, which can recognise hand and arm movements and supports operating intentions. The exterior design not only exudes presence and power, but also sets a new standard for aerodynamics in the SUV segment. The GLE will receive a completely new range of engines on market launch in early 2019. The new 4MATIC ensures great agility on the road and superior performance off the beaten track. At a later stage a plug-in hybrid variant with a particularly long range will be added to the drive portfolio.

The Mercedes-Benz GLE 450 4MATIC as the first petrol model on market launch is powered by an M 256 in-line six-cylinder engine systematically electrified with 48-volt technology (combined market launch: Its performance data: 270 kW (367 hp) and 500 Nm of torque, with a further 250 Nm of torque and 16 kW/22 hp available via EQ Boost over short periods. The integrated starter/alternator (ISG) is responsible for hybrid functions such as EQ Boost or energy recuperation, while allowing fuel savings that were previously reserved for high-voltage hybrid technology.

ISG eliminates the need for a belt drive for ancillary components at the front of the engine, which reduces its overall length. The slim design, together with the physical separation of intake/exhaust, creates space for near-engine exhaust aftertreatment. The 48-volt on-board power supply serves not only high power consumers such as the water pump and air-conditioning compressor, but also the Integrated Starter Generator (ISG), which also supplies energy to the battery by means of highly efficient energy recuperation.

Eye-catching off-road attributes and assured performance on rough ground combined with the premium characteristics and signature dynamics of a #BMW: this was the blueprint with which BMW launched the all-new Sports Activity Vehicle (SAV) category almost 20 years ago. The first example of the breed was the BMW #X5, making it the founding father of the BMW X model family and the market leader in the premium all-wheel drive segment - a status it maintains to this day.

The power unit fitted in the new BMW X5 xDrive40i boasts the free-revving ability inherent in all six-cylinder in-line engines from BMW, plus wonderfully eager response. The 3.0-litre unit employs a twin-scroll turbocharger and direct petrol injection technology whose maximum pressure of 350 bar ensures the fuel is delivered in extremely precise doses. The straight-six generates its maximum output of 250 kW/340 hp between 5,500 and 6,500 rpm, while the peak torque of 450 Nm (332 lb-ft) is waiting to be unleashed from 1,500 - 5,200 rpm.

The new BMW X5 xDrive40i completes the 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) sprint in just 5.5 seconds. Fuel consumption averages 8.8 - 8.5 litres per 100 kilometres (32.1 - 33.2 mpg imp) and CO2 emissions are 200 - 193 grams per kilometre.

#Volkswagen presented the completely redeveloped #Touareg in China - the flagship of the brand. Equipped with the connectivity of a new era and a pioneering fusion of assistance, comfort, lighting and infotainment systems, the Volkswagen Touareg points the way to the future. At the same time, the exclusive SUV charges up its market segment with pure dynamism. The largest markets for what is now the third generation of the Touareg are China, Europe and Russia. Worldwide sales of the previous two generations amount to nearly one million units. The Volkswagen Touareg - as comfortable as it is dynamic - has, as the most technically advanced Volkswagen of its era, the potential to enthuse technology and design savvy drivers of premium class models of all sorts, reaching new target groups as well.

In 2018, Volkswagen will be offering the new Volkswagen Touareg with a new plug-in hybrid drive (270 kW/367 PS system power), initially in China. The exact European launch date for the Touareg with a plug-in hybrid drive is still open; in Europe, two V6 diesels with 170 kW/231 PS and 210 kW/286 PS will be offered at first. This will also be followed by a V6 petrol engine (250 kW/340 PS) and a V8 turbodiesel (310 kW/421 PS) for many different markets.
