Hi there! I am Joseph.
I have been an expat living in central Portugal along with my beautiful girlfriend Mariana for six years now.

Together Mariana and I, along with my father Clinton and my brother in law Lloyd, would like to show you a bit of the daily goings on around our Portuguese farm / homestead / smallholding and all of the work we are doing whilst renovating, starting building projects, working with our livestock, DIY and trying to grow our little families own food!

In this episode we welcome you to join us in early summer time as we are given a tour around our dear friends farm house, which is for sale, in a rural mountain village in central Portugal.

We start the virtual tour by introducing ourselves and explaining the reason behind our neighbour and friend selling his farm and home in central Portugal, we are not estate agents and have no involvement in the sale of this property but we believe this to be one of the most beautiful farms around and a bargain too, so it is our pleasure to help out Senhor Pinto.

We start the tour by walking around the land, checking out all the fruit trees and making our way down to my favourite aspect of this farm, the private 1,130m2 private lake, which is constantly home to nesting moorhens, mallards, water voles and even stocked with grass carp so you can build a jetty, tie up a little rowing boat, plant a willow tree and some water lilies and fish in the peaceful tranquillity of your own garden.

The irrigation pond is of course meant for just that, fed by a natural spring which keeps the water level topped up year round and has enough water to keep your little slice of paradise green and lush throughout the hot summer months. A much needed commodity which most farms do not have in Portugal, one that should not be overlooked or undervalued.

Shortly afterwards, we take a walk around the rest of the farm. Checking out the boundary fence, pottering round the many different meadows and fields and seeing what trees and woodland are available to any lucky buyer.

Together Mariana and I chat with Senhor Pinto as we are walking around, asking questions about the 3 hectares of land and all of its assets, of which there are many. Constantly making our way back up to the top of the terraces of the homestead, where Pinto explains to us where he used to have his cherry orchards, of course these could once more be turned into orchards, providing even more of an income than the already affluent olive harvest. There are around 150 olive trees which would easily rake in € 3,000 euros per year in olive oil sales.

After the walk around tour we make our way to the 200 square metre barn / livestock house that is situated on the very top level of the smallholding. This can easily house the 19 sheep that Pinto has living in there, his tractor, two farm vehicles, trailers and a large store of hay bales. We also take a look at the borehole which is well supplied with clean tested drinking water and also the property is connected to mains electricity, so no extra fees or costs.

Finally we view the ruin, the old farmhouse, the rock slate walls are good and intact, the inside would need total reconstruction, which would not be hard or expensive, I have many contacts of builders, electricians, plumbers etc and I can be on hand throughout the building process to translate if necessary as I live not too far from this farm and I have many contacts in the area which could give quotes before hand.

We say goodbye to Pinto and his wife and we head back to our farm, via the 200 metre long cobbled driveway, with good access to the village and all of its amenities, cafes, butchers, shops, hairdressers, swimming beach, restaurant etc.

Back on our farm I take to the blackthorn and bramble bushes to pick some summer fruits and make a sloe gin, of course I show my recipe and method.

Right at the end of the day I talk a little about this week and how everything went, standing in the entrance to our one hectare vineyard, checking the grapes to see when they will be ready for harvest and eating a freshly picked apple. It was nice that we managed to look around the property for sale and seeing everything that it has to offer, such a cheap farm too!

See our journey to self sufficiency / permaculture / organic farming living in Portugal, trying to produce as much of our own food planting vegetables, growing fruit trees as well as looking after all our animals, such as our chickens, turkeys, geese, ducks, quail, rabbits and sheep - Shortly pigs too!

- Growing vegetables, raising meat and foraging on our cherry farm in Portugal’s Beira baixa, Fundão
