OUR FARM DAILY ROUTINE MID SUMMER, CENTRAL PORTUGAL -HOW WE IRRIGATE -GROWING FOOD - SELF SUFFICIENT

Hi there! I am Joseph.
I have been an immigrant, or expat, living in central Portugal along with my beautiful Portuguese girlfriend Mariana for six years now.

Together Mariana and I, along with my father Clinton and my brother in law Lloyd, would like to show you a bit of the daily goings on around our Portuguese farm / homestead / smallholding and all of the work we are doing whilst renovating, starting building projects, working with our livestock, DIY and trying to grow our little families own food!

In this episode we welcome you to join us in mid summer time as we visit and give you a virtual tour around our cherry farm, located in Fundão, central Portugal.

First thing in the morning I wander down to the poultry pasture, let the chickens, ducks, turkeys and geese all out onto their meadow.

Then I water the vegetable patch, give a little talk about who I am and what we are doing before I go up to the top fields and open up the sheep barn for the day, letting them all rush past me and plod out onto their fields. I talk a while about the dangers of keeping rams, male sheep, as this week unfortunately my father was headbutted by our tank of a ram, Godfrey. he is a big boy and a butt from him is enough to knock anyone off their feet, for sure!

After that, I pick some vegetables from the veggie garden, namely courgettes, tomatoes and cucumbers. These will be used later on in the episode. I take my baskets of eggs and veg back to the farmhouse.

Shortly afterward once a nice cup of coffee has been enjoyed I explain that Mariana has been away the past week, down to Sesimbra to visit her family where they all plan to throw her a baby shower. She is missed dearly whilst away, I decide to surprise her and build a nice baby cot, she will be pleased when she sees this, I am certain!

Once that was completed it was time to pick Mariana up from the train station. The train was right on time pulling in Fundão and we meet Mariana as she steps onto the platform.

Once I have caught up with my dear Mariana I talk a while about the hot weather during the summer months here, what it means for all the crops and pasture, how they survive with the lack of rainfall every year and of course how we irrigate, and then how our irrigation system works here on the farm. Via sprinklers and drip irrigation systems for the cherry orchards and other fruit trees.

After a hot afternoon in the sun I decided to take to the farmhouse kitchen, where I show my very own blue cheese and veggie ratatouille. It was rather delicious I must say and my mother enjoyed it with me and my father down by the pool, as it was her birthday so we all had lunch and tea together.

Mariana and I sit down at the end of the day, once all the animals are closed in for the night. I open a bottle of homemade wine from our vineyard and together we tell you all a little surprise which we have been holding onto the last few weeks, just before we recap the weeks goings on and say goodbye.

See our journey to self sufficiency / permaculture / organic farming as expats living in Portugal, trying to produce as much of our own food planting vegetables, growing fruit trees as well as looking after all our animals, such as our chickens, turkeys, geese, ducks, quail, rabbits and sheep - Shortly pigs too!
