OUR DAILY PORTUGUESE FARM LIFE-THIEVES IN THE VEGETABLE PATCH, HAY BALE DELIVERY & MAKING CHERRY JAM

Hi there! I am Joseph.
I have been an expat living in central Portugal along with my beautiful girlfriend Mariana for six years now.

Together Mariana and I, along with my father Clinton and my brother in law Lloyd, would like to show you a bit of the daily goings on around our Portuguese farm / homestead / smallholding and all of the work we are doing whilst renovating, starting building projects, working with our livestock, DIY and trying to grow our little families own food!

In this episode we welcome you to join us in late Spring time as we continue our cherry harvest into the fifth week of the season. We are all a little tired of the cherries now and our fingers are starting to get sore, but we love what we do and we are just so happy that this year the fruit seems to be coming good, meaning we are experiencing a nice, bountiful end to our harvest time.

Mariana and I start the week off picking an order of cherries for our wholesaler. Earning money from our fruit orchard is almost coming to a close this year now as we are well on the homestretch to finishing the harvest. After we have finished that we continue to pick a couple of kilos of cherries for our own use later in the episode.

Afterwards I take a look around the vegetable patch, see how all the veggies are doing and as I do so I notice something, a thief has been around during the early hours in the morning and has pulled up some young shoots and sprouts, the last straw was losing a couple of young lettuce heads that we planted last week...

Mariana & I discuss our options and decide to call in for backup, in the form of a scarecrow! Watch as we show you exactly how we put him together and how he was constructed.

Lloyd joins me up at the sheep barn later that evening as we await our hay delivery, which will give the sheep their summer fodder diet when all the grasses dry up due to lack of rain, meaning the sheep won't go hungry!

The next morning, once the sun comes up my father helps me load all of the straw bales onto the back of our little 15 horsepower compact Yanmar mini tractor and load them all up into the pole barn.

Later that afternoon Mariana and I show our personal cherry jam recipe, no added pectin required!

Right at the end of the video I recap the goings on this week on the farm, accompanied by Mitzy, as we all sit down up by the pond with a nice cold beer... Which went down a treat due to this heatwave we have been experiencing.
