I Get a Seat on the Final United 747 International Flight; Farewell Ceremony at ICN Gate 111

After a lengthy check-in process at Seoul Incheon International Airport (ICN) Gate 111, I’ve got my boarding pass on the last United Airlines Boeing 747 international flight from ICN to San Francisco (SFO). I was issued Seat 52B, a middle seat toward the back of Economy Class. I’m going to hop online to see if I can change that to a better seat.

At Gate 111, the flight crew is getting pictures taken in front of the “Bon Voyage to the Queen of the Skies” banner. A United executive makes remarks. He says the airplane has been in the UA fleet 47 years (since 1970).

“We’ve had up to 100 747s under United tail numbers over the years, as high as 48 in the fleet at any one given point in time,” the executive says. “This is a very bittersweet farewell for many of us. The people who are on this flight are really today being part of United’s history and we thank you for joining us. All of our passengers will find a commemorative gift on your seat when they board and we’d like you to keep that just in memory of this occasion.”

Capt. Rodriguez, who will fly the farewell 747 voyage to SFO, is presented a model United Boeing 747-400. The captain and purser Patricia Graham are given framed certificates commemorating the final international flight of a United 747.

There’s lots of excitement at the gate. Many people are having their photo taken with the banner.
