Oceania Marina Sails Away from Bora Bora, French Polynesia

12:58 p.m.: It’s a gorgeous afternoon here at Bora Bora, French Polynesia, aboard Oceania Marina. We are getting ready to sail out. Our scheduled departure is in two minutes. We’ll be voyaging to Nuku Hiva in the in the remote Marquesas Islands.

Oceania Marina has been anchored in Vaitape Bay near the main town of the island on the west coast since yesterday morning. The crew is raising up a lifeboat that was used for tendering.

1:10 p.m.: We are in motion, passing beautiful motus (islets) as we leave the shallow lagoon and head out to the open South Pacific Ocean. It’s 948 miles from here all the way out to Nuku Hiva. We will be at sea the rest of the day today, all day tomorrow, and arriving in 47 hours at noon Feb. 16.

This is one of the more scenic sail-aways I’ve ever had. Bora Bora Pearl Beach Resort & Spa overwater bungalows are visible in the distance. We’re heading west out of Vaitape, then making a sweeping right turn soon to proceed around the west coast of the Bora Bora motus then around the north side of the island. We have four islands and atolls remaining on our voyage.

My video concludes with a timelapse sailing around Bora Bora.
