Riding the waves: Lessons from surfing to beat burnout | Diane Shannon | TEDxNortheasternU

This talk sheds light on making small, intentional microchanges that restore balance, agency, and joy—allowing us to stay in our professions and thrive instead of wiping out. After experiencing burnout early in her primary care career, Dr. Diane Shannon left clinical practice to focus on writing and advocacy. For over 20 years, she has highlighted solutions to clinician burnout, system inefficiencies, and patient safety issues. She co-authored Preventing Physician Burnout: Curing the Chaos and Returning Joy to the Practice of Medicine (2016).Motivated by her own experience, she became a certified coach in 2019 and has since supported hundreds of clinicians in building sustainable, fulfilling careers. She launched her podcast, Vital Signs: Thriving as a Woman in Medicine, in January 2024 and continues to speak and write on clinician wellness. In her free time, she enjoys time with her three young adult children, traveling with her husband, and surfing. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx
