The Kidnapping Question: Could Depression Be A Normal Reaction?

Toward the end of an assessment of an individual experiencing depression, I will often ask what I think of as the Kidnapping Question. It often reveals a lot about what's going on, gets us both on the same page, and makes a good case for some of the work we'll do in therapy. It's also a good way to take a step back and look at our own behavior, whether you are depressed, in therapy, or neither.
