D-Day - The Slapton Sands Disaster (Exercise Tiger - World War 2) | Animated War Stories

Exercise Tiger was a rehearsal for the D-Day landings in World War 2. It took place at Slapton Sands in April 1944 and whilst the actual D-Day landings would be a complete success, Exercise Tiger would be one of the biggest disasters of the Second World War.

Gearing up for the invasion of Normandy, D-Day, the Allies knew the scale and complexity of the invasion (codenamed Operation Overlord) would mean plenty of rehearsals would be needed.

Exercise Tiger would facilitate a full mock invasion of Utah Beach. An area similar to Utah Beach was found at Slapton Sands in Devon, England.

Unfortunately two separate events would turn the exercise into one of the worst disasters of the Second World War. At Slapton Sands, 1,000 men would be killed, more than 3 times the number that would actually be killed at Utah Beach on D-Day itself.
