Fiery the Angels fell... (Blade Runner)
In spite of his violent character and hatred for humans, audience can empathize with Roy Batty (Rutger Hauer) and understand his behaviour. In this scene, he quotes (or adapts) William’s Blake verses from “America: A Prophecy”:
"Fiery the Angels fell, deep thunder roll'd
Around their shores: burning with the fires of Orc".
Batty replaces “rose” for “fell”, since replicants have come down to Earth (searching for his “Father”, Tyrell), rebelling against their fate (they are programmed to live just around four years).
Orc is a character from Blake’s mythology, who embodies the rebellion and transgression of divine law. Batty is an outlaw who comes to Earth with the goal of transgressing the laws of Tyrell, the “God” of Genetic Engineering. The quote fits perfectly, since Batty –like Orc- pursues freedom, and in spite of his violence, his character appears positive in the end, leaving the eternal question every science fiction writer poses: what it means to be human.
