Ample make this Bed (Sophie's Choice)
If 'Sophie's Choice' had been shot in the last decade, the infatuation between Sophie (Meryl streep) and Nathan (Kevin Kline) would have arrived at its climax with a torrid bed scene, something which did not suit the topic of the film.
Alan J.Pakula solves it very cleverly, with both sitting in the bed, and Nathan teaching her English through poetry, reading Emily Dickinson's 'Ample make this Bed':
AMPLE make this bed.
Make this bed with awe;
In it wait till judgment break
Excellent and fair.
Be its mattress straight,
Be its pillow round;
Let no sunrise' yellow noise
Interrupt this ground.
If Dickinson's poetry is sometimes enigmatic, its use in this scene is quite clear.
