The Ballad of Reading Gaol (Wilde)
Wilde is well-known for his puns and ironic criticism of Victorian society, but his most touching work of art is this poem, which he wrote during his time in prison, after being condemned for his immoral behaviour (gross indecency) according to Victorian morals.
Here we can hear Stephen Fry's voice reciting a part of the poem in the film Wilde, using the poem both to show Wilde's broken spirit after his stay in jail, and to reflect on his relationship with her defunct wife.
