Is love a fancy or a feeling? (Sense and Sensibility)
Marianne’s insistence forces Edward to read aloud a passage from Cowper’s The Castaway, but she is disappointed by his rendering of the poem, recriminating that no passion can be felt in the way he recites.
Later, she reads Coleridge’s Sonnet VII, before discussing Edward’s unemotional reading with her sister Elinor.
According to Cristian Campos, the differences between passionate Marianne and sensible Elinor seem to pose the question about which is the way which leads to romantic happiness: spontaneity of emotions or racionality’s good judgement. But perhaps Jane Austen is just saying that the way for each of us is exactly the contrary to that in our nature.
