How to Optimize Your Phone for Gaming on Gear VR: Bloatware, Systems, Battery

The Gear VR headset lets you play virtual reality games on select Samsung smartphone devices but it requires a lot of space for games and downloaded movie content as well as power to run the advanced gaming software and gyroscopes for movement tracking. In this quick tutorial I talk about removing bloatware (software you didn’t install… it just comes with the phones) and adjusting power settings so the phone can last longer with games). I also talk about how you don’t need a sim card or phone plan to use the Gear VR, you can use it on WiFi networks or tether it to another phone and download and play software that way as long as you create an Oculus account (which is free).

In addition to de-activating and disabling some software I also like to remove icons from the desktop of the phone. You can also move things around and create folders. Don’t worry about removing too many programs as you aren’t actually getting rid of anything… you can always go back into settings, application manager, disabled and re-enable them. What you’re doing by disabling them is preventing updates which use more space and keeping them from coming online and using your processing power.

I also like to mute the sounds, turn off vibrations, turn off smart alert, palm swipe and other motion alerts, I also disable wallpaper motion effect and turn down display brightness and enable auto.
