What’s the Best Phone for the Gear VR? Samsung Galaxy S6, S6 Edge, S6 Edge+ or Note5

One of the biggest questions surrounding the Samsung Gear VR is which phone is best? There are four different models of Samsung Galaxy phones that are compatible with the device including the S6, S6 Edge, S6 Edge+ and Note5 and each phone delivers some unique benefit.

The S6 Edge weighs 131 Grams making it the lightest of all the devices but it also has a smaller field of view (FOV) and may let some light in from the top and bottom on the consumer Gear VR headset. The standard S6 weighs 140 Grams, the S6 Edge+ weighs 151 Grams and the Note5 weighs 169 Grams. Both the Edge+ and Note 5 offer the largest batteries at 3,000 mAh vs. 2,600 mAh on the S6 and S6 Edge and the larger phones also offer more ram at 4 GB vs. just 3 GB on the smaller devices.

In this test I tried to capture pixel density using video and photos but found that it was very difficult. My own qualitative experience has been that the larger screens do have more screen door effect (SDE) than the smaller but that they offer a very similar experience.
