A Shield for Our Beliefs: Thinking Beyond Familiarity | Bi Quentin | TEDxNACIS Shanghai Youth
The core message of the speech is that we should shift from passive acceptance to active thinking. Before believing, sharing, or arguing about information, we should pause and ask key questions: Does it make logical sense? Is the source trustworthy? Has it been verified in multiple places? And could it simply be a rumor, opinion, or marketing strategy? The speech also highlights the concept of the parasocial trap, explaining that people often trust information not because it is accurate, but because it comes from someone they feel familiar with or emotionally connected to.
In terms of impact, the speech encourages the audience to develop a habit of pausing and reflecting rather than reacting immediately. It reminds listeners not to let emotions or familiarity override logic, and to become more independent, thoughtful decision-makers. Ultimately, it inspires the audience to become “smart doubters” who can think critically, avoid misinformation, and confidently distinguish truth from noise in a complex digital world. I am someone born with curiosity, observing the world with both eyes and heart. I have patience to watch ants carry food, wondering how tiny lives divide work and cooperate; and sensitivity to pause and admire falling autumn leaves, reflecting on growth and transformation. Because I love observing, I've developed independent thinking rather than blindly following others. Confucius said, 'Learning without thinking leads to confusion.' To me, learning is never just memorizing answers. It's learning how to ask questions and how to think. This ability isn't momentary curiosity but a lasting strength that supports our growth. In an age where reality and the online world intertwine, rational thinking helps us see clearly and walk steadily. I'm delighted to meet you here. May we become people who love to think and know how to think—exploring truth through learning, discovering beauty in life, and through constant questioning, meeting a braver, clearer, more powerful version of ourselves. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx
