Transgender athletes officially banned from competing in female competitions at the Olympics

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has announced that transgender athletes will be banned from competing in female competitions.

On Thursday, IOC President Kirsty Coventry announced the decision was “based on science” and led by “medical experts”.

Following a two-year investigation by the IOC, it found that male chromosomes provide advantages in competitions that rely on “strength, power, or endurance”.

“At the Olympic Games, even the smallest margins can be the difference between victory and defeat. So, it's absolutely clear that it would not be fair for biological males to compete in the female category,” Coventry said.

“In addition, in some sports, it would simply not be safe. Every athlete must be treated with dignity and respect.”

The new policy will be implemented immediately ahead of the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles.
