Card surcharges labelled ‘preposterous’ as RBA ban to come into effect in October

Shadow Assistant Minister for International Development Dave Sharma says he finds surcharging “abhorrent” and “preposterous,” as the Reserve Bank of Australia plans to ban them from October 2026 onwards.

“I think it’s a great idea, I find surcharging abhorrent, the idea that you pay an extra fee to hand over your money over to someone because of the method you use, I think is just preposterous,” Mr Sharma told Sky News host Chris Kenny.

“Banks need to be basically charging the merchants less … that’s part of the RBA’s proposal.”
