Buying the CHEAPEST TELE-LENS on Amazon

If you ever searched for lenses on Amazon, you most definitely encountered one of those cheap glasses with huge focal lengths just like this one. I always wondered how good they actually are but looking at the reviews they seem to be not worth the money. I still decided to buy one, here are the results.

First, the most important answer: This lens is obviously not worth the money. The photos it produces aren't really sharp, especially towards the edges. It might be cool for a 'creative effect' but it isn't usable for professional work.

Before we can attach this thing to our camera we first need to screw on the lens-mount using the included allen key. This seems a bit strange, but since the lens is offered for a wider range of camera brands it makes sense to just include the desired camera mount separated.

When shooting with such long focal lengths there are a few vital things to keep in mind:

1. Don’t shoot handheld. Your body is shaking, and this shaking is amplified by the immense focal length. You won’t be able to get sharp photos this way.

2. Use a tripod and make sure it’s sturdy. Try to not expand the tripod too much and place it closer to the ground to prevent shaking caused by wind.

3. If possible, use a remote to take the photo. Touching the camera will result in shaking. If you don’t have a remote you can use the self-timer.

Now how does the lens compare to other ones? First off This lens seems to be just a tube with some glass inside, you cannot change the aperture so you have to control the outcome with exposure time and ISO. Also, not surprisingly, this lens doesn’t have auto-focus. You have to set the focus manually.

The missing aperture is kind of strange, but you can work around that. Having said that, the liveview-image seems to be a lot darker than the actual photo which is an annoyance! Playing with different exposure lengths / ISO is the only way to find a decent setting.

Having no auto-focus for me personally as a landscape photographer isn’t a big deal. However, taking pictures of anything that moves becomes near impossible this way. Focusing on an immobile object at 800 mm already is a bit of a challenge.
