VAL DI FUNES (Funes Valley) | Episode 4 | SHOOTING the DOLOMITES (SUB ENG/ITA) | Leo's Photo Guides

A lot of respectable magazines and travel guides describe the Val di Funes as the most beautiful valley of the Dolomites. But is it, really?
Green pastures with sheep and cows, typical wooden houses and tiny postcard villages, all of this at the feet of the rugged Odle, one of the most impressive and recognizable mountain ranges of the entire Dolomites without any doubt. This is what the Funes Valley is all about.
A very quiet place on one hand, where it feels like time has stopped somewhere between 80 and 40 years ago, while on the other hand the tourism facilities are quickly bringing you back to our time (in a good way!) as they are top notch and there's a vast offering of all kinds of outdoor activities, with plenty of hikes to do.

Photography wise, by far the two subjects that made this valley so famous amongst travel photographers from all over the world are the two churches of Santa Magdalena and San Giovanni in Ranui; these two spots, very similar for many reasons, over the years became two of the most iconic postcard views of the Dolomites. In both cases, the recurring subject of the tiny church (that gives scale to the landscape) against those rugged peaks in the background is, in my opinion, what makes these shots so beautiful!

Both of these locations are very easy to reach and very close between each other - which is probably another factor that helped them growing so much in popularity. In this video, we will see together how to reach the two locations, at what times of the day and the year I'd recommend to visit and the possible compositions in each spot. Last but not least, I'll give you my humble and honest opinion about these two locations at the end of the video. Let me know what you think!
