Where Is She? (Soft Surrender) - Fourth Version (Guitar) - The Killers - Live Hot Fuss Tour

This is based on how Dave Keuning played the fourth version of this song during the Hot Fuss tour.

The guitar is tuned to Eb.

This version comes from a video on YouTube of the performance at The Fillmore, San Francisco on 19th April 2005. Thanks to TheNuke126 for the video.

This is the last recording of the song that I know of, although it was performed half a dozen further times after this during the tour.

This is actually the best performance of the song to see what Dave is playing, although the audio quality is poor and the recording isn’t complete, so I’ve had to ‘make up’ the last part of the song, based on earlier examples.
Additionally, because this is the only version that’s played using a guitar tuned down to Eb, rather than standard tuning, the positions of the chords are different and overall I would say that it’s the hardest version to play.

The song starts with the normal repeating riff, although it’s cut a little short this time ending with obvious vibrato on the B string 13th fret and then moves into triads on the D, G & B strings, before the singing starts.

Use of triads in the verses with a moving bass note on the D string and the little finger extending on and off to the 8th fret B string (does that make it a ‘7th’?), is a complete change from the barre chords played in the earlier versions and it certainly must have been a bit harder to sing over.

We then have the usual bridging instrumental part. There’s a particularly big volume jump on this version and it sounds like Dave may be using a fuzz pedal, although it could just be distortion from the poor audio.

The next change is during the octaves pre-chorus section. Whereas versions two and three just stuck to octaves, this version transitions from the octave to a full chord, bringing in the B string and then the E string on some of them. I’m not sure whether the D string is always damped, or rings when bringing in the B and E strings, which I think would then make them ‘11’ chords.

Due to the Eb tuning, the choruses are all barre chords, rather than the open chords of the three previous versions. As you can see, the fifth chord of the chorus is quite a tricky shape. I’m not 100% sure about that chord; I can see Dave playing it a couple of times - the first time looks and sounds like what I’m playing, but the second time, he may be playing it with the ring finger on the 3rd fret E string, instead of the 3rd fret G string - which is an even harder transition. Anyway, I’ve stuck to one shape throughout, mirroring the chord from the earlier versions of the song.

The middle-8 alternate picked section is now in its definitive version in terms of note selection, IMO.

Guitar-wise, Dave used his 1996 50th Anniversary Candy Apple Red Fender American Standard Stratocaster.

I’m using exactly the same specification guitar.

Delay from Dave’s Boss DD-3 or DD-6 is used for the main riff.

I’m using a Boss DD-6 for delay.

I used an EHX Green Russian Big Muff fuzz for the instrumental part after the first two verses.

The rest of the song is just played with a mildly driven amp tone throughout.
