Steve Edwards Trains the Draft Horse Staff at the Minnesota Zoo

Joe joins the staff of the draft horse program at the Minnesota Zoo in Apple Valley, MN in a workshop with renown trainer Steve Edwards.

Steve Edwards of Queen Valley Mule ranch introduces himself and the purpose of his workshop today. We meet Tony Fischer - Animal Collection Manager and Dean Treangan - Farm Supervisor. The Zoo has two American Cream Draft Hores (the only draft horse bred in the United States) and two Perchrons.

Steve works with Tony, Dean and the farm hands and with the horses to build communication between the horse and the handler.

First Steve teaches them about the come-a-long hitch, how to tie it and what type of rope to use. He tied ad demonstrates on Dean and then on one of the horses. This hitch is used to teach the horse not to back up by making the horse uncomfortable when he does.

Steve then shows the three different types of "war bridles" and explains why the come-a-long hitch and why he prefers it.

Steve explains that horses do not understand words but do understand an association between a word and discomfort. He demonstrates how to communicate with the rope with the staff and then in the pen with the horse.

Next he teaches how to ground drive a team with quiet, light pressure on the lines.
