Montgomery Wagon Train 2021

Joe rides along on the 48th annual Montgomery Wagon Train from Centre to Montgomery, Alabama. He rides in a number of wagons and interviews the teamsters along the way.

The first wagon is John Coley's. He started riding along with his grandparents o the 2nd ride. It was only 12 people then and was a 5 day, 165 mile ride. He tells us about his farm, raising livestock (heritage hogs), buying, selling and raising mules and horses. He discusses how the wagon train came about, changes over the years to both the schedule and route.

A typical day now goes like this:
4:30am - wake up and prepare mules get a bite to eat
6:30 am - trailers head to the evening camp site and people are shuttled back wagons
9:00 am start riding
3:00 to 5:00 pm - finish the ride.

Todd Hill tells us about his team of 3 mules and his trips as a kid. He was 15 on his first ride with his parents and then attended the Southeastern Livestock Exposition Rodeo

Donald Simms talks about riding with his brothers when they were younger and all had wagons and teams.

Roy Coley tells us how he rode a horse on the ride for years and showed us some old pictures of the riders and some memorabilia.

Mark Snead talks about his grandma's store in Forney, Alabama and the beginnings of the Forney Saddle Club (organizers of the Wagon train). He went on his first ride with a neighbor when he was 10. This is his 45th ride! He discusses why it changed from 5 days to 10 - to make the days shorter for the mules.

Lastly we see wonderful footage of the teams resting in camp and on a steep hill along the ride.

The Montgomery Wagon Train is usually held the 2nd and 3rd weeks of March.
2022 ride is March 7-18
