Historic Barns of Ohio
Bob Kroeger visits, studies, draws and paints old barns. Joe sits down with him to discuss his new book Historic Barns of Ohio, how it came about and why he studies barns.
Bob is a retired dentist, painter and historian of old barns from Cincinnati, Ohio. He shares his personal history and his epiphany while looking at an old barn while on a trip with his wife. He talked with the barn owner about the barn and farm history including the family who lived there.
He felt he was being told to paint these old barns and preserve their history before they are gone.
So, he studied painting (he had painted in his youth). Once he was pleased with his paintings, he connected with the Historical Society of Highland County and found a "barn scout" who would find barns for him to visit. He eventually sold some of his paintings as fundraisers for 4H and the Historical Society.
He was also inspired by photographer Edward Curtis' ability to capture a culture that was vanishing.
He explains that he does not do this for money but to preserve history. He eventually decided to publish an affordable book which includes pictures of his paintings as well as the stories behind the barns and farms.
Bob and Joe head out to Claremont County where Bob shows us a historic barn he had painted and how he goes about the process of sketching, photographing and taking notes on the barn before he goes home and paints it.
