Suffolk Punch Horses at Berea College
Joe takes a trip to Berea College to talk with Sam Tackett and Ben Floyd about their newly acquired Suffolk stud colt draft horses. Jason Rutledge of Healing Harvest Foundation was instrumental in the acquisition and joins the two to talk about the breed.

We meet Foggy Bottom Floyd a young 2-year-old stud colt. He will be 16H tall and about the same measurement in girth like a classic Suffolk. Jason talks about the breed and explains its conformation. The past 500 years of breeding the Suffolk horse has been selected for lack of flight/fear response, low to the ground and easy friendly temperament.
Ben Burgess then brings out his 2-year-old+ stud colt. Jason says they are about ready to be put to work. They try to wait until their joints close.
The Suffolk Punch draft horse species is considered "critically endangered", not because of its weakness as a species but because it does not have a place. we need more horse loggers etc. to use them. There are only about 60 foals born in North America each year.
Jason then talks about Healing Harvest Foundation and its efforts to help grow the species. Jason is a consultant at Berea College and has been working towards the goal of improving their Suffolk Program for 15 years.
We then get to go into the woods with Ben and Sam and their existing team of Suffolks to watch as they all expertly work together to do some horse logging. It is a joy to watch this well trained team of draft horses along with their teamsters work at their practice of environmentally friendly logging/restorative forestry.
