Switching to Suffolk Horses at Riceland Meadows

Joe visits with Ralph and Jakob Rice in Jefferson, Ohio, who recently purchased a total of 5 Suffolk horses. They discuss their reasons for changing to the Suffolk or Suffolk Punch breed on their horse powered farms as well as showing us some of their training practices for the youngsters. It is their goal to promote this endangered breed of draft horse.

First Joe talks with Jakob Rice as he explains his work situation having a full time work as EMS supervisor as well as a RN and a farm to manage on top of that.
He explains that purchased his pair of Suffolks for many reasons:
Need to be safe around his wife and young children
Calm disposition
Not jumpy
Learn quickly

He then explains and demonstrates how he is training them to remain calm while exposing them to all manner of noises and obstacles.

Next we hear from Ralph Rice on his switch from large Percheron horses (which he used for 30 years) to Suffolks. He finds their size easier for him to harness and handle as he gets older.

Ralph introduces us to his 4 Suffolk - 7 week old filly foal, a yearling stallion prospect and two mares (one pregnant). He also talks about how he is using them not and the necessity of purebred horses to begin breeding and helping the Suffolk population begin to recover.
