2024 GCSE Geography exams are just 67 days away! Join me as we cover 90 facts in 90 days! Today's topic... river erosional processes.
Erosion is the wearing away of the river bed and banks. There are four main erosional processes in rivers. Hydraulic action is the sheer force of the water hitting the river bed and banks. Air becomes trapped in cracks and crevices in the banks, causing them to break apart. Abrasion is when the load being carried by the river is hit against the bed or banks. Attrition is when rocks being carried by the river are hit against each other, making them smaller and rounder. Solution happens when the slightly acidic river water flows over rocks such as limestone or chalk, dissolving them.
