In parts of Burkina Faso, lines of stones known as ‘magic stones’ have been constructed for water management. They are between 0.5m and 1.5m high and are built along the contours of slopes, trapping water and soil when it rains. This has increased crops by up to 50%, successfully mitigating desertification. This is also an example of appropriate technology - locals used basic tools and vehicles to transport the stones.
