The Carter Foundation announced on Saturday that former US President Jimmy Carter 98, is receiving hospice care at home, where he will spend his "remaining time." Carter served as president from 1977 to 1981.
A recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize and the oldest living former president, Carter and his wife Rosalynn make their home in Plains, Georgia.There, he spent his early years as a peanut farmer before rising through the ranks to become governor and eventually the Democratic Party's choice for president.
It was announced on Twitter by the Carter Centre that former US President Jimmy Carter had elected to terminate his life at home with his family and hospice care rather than undergo any more medical intervention.Carter's first two years in office were very successful, and he was able to make strides in a number of areas, including human rights and social justice.
His government ran into several problems, the worst of which being the 1980 kidnapping of 52 Americans in an abortive rescue mission in Iran.
This was the year that Ronald Reagan, the Republican nominee, defeated incumbent President Jimmy Carter in the general election, limiting Carter to a single term in office. A tide of conservative fervour propelled Reagan to the presidency. Over time, a more nuanced portrait of Carter has formed, one that takes into account his post-presidential actions and reevaluates his accomplishments.
He received the Nobel Peace Prize in 2002 for his relentless efforts to advance social and economic fairness, and he established the Carter Centre in 1982 to further his vision of global diplomacy.
The Carter Centre has issued a statement saying, "The Carter family asks for privacy during this time and is grateful for the concern exhibited by his many followers."He is surrounded by love and care from his family and doctors, it said.
Even in his 90s, former President Carter was still teaching Sunday school at his church, Maranatha Baptist, in Plains, where he regularly attended. He has claimed that basic Christian values like justice and love served as the backbone of his presidency.
Carter has been hospitalised on multiple occasions over the past few years, including when he announced in August 2015 that he had brain cancer and was having radiation treatment; he miraculously beat the disease.Georgia Senator Raphael Warnock, who also serves as pastor of the same church where Martin Luther King Jr. delivered his famous sermon, offered his condolences to the Carter family.
Throughout the ups and downs of life, President Jimmy Carter has walked with God," Warnock tweeted. God is with him in this delicate transitional period. On April 20, 2021, Vice President Joseph Biden and his wife, Jill, visited the Carters in Plains.
Later, the White House shared a photo of the happy couples, but only Rosalynn was spotted by the media outside, saying goodbye to the Bidens while aided by a walker.A former state senator in Georgia, Jason Carter, Carter's grandson, tweeted on Saturday that he had met "both of my grandparents yesterday."
