Gill Net Cutting into Seal's Mouth

Gill nets are among the worst kind of entanglement. They are difficult to spot, and they are designed to kill anything that gets caught in it, including seals. They are almost invisible under water, and even old gill nets that have been illegally dumped into the ocean will continue to injure and kill marine animals. They are made from plastic and do not break down. They are illegal in Namibia and most other places in the world because of the devastating impact on marine life, but with the absence of proper control mechanisms, many fishing vessels use them anyways and they most often get away with it.

This seal was "collateral damage" at it's finest. She was not the targeted fish species, and the net might have been in the ocean for a while already, and without the help of the OCN rescuers, she would have died soon from starvation or suffocation. The rescuers almost lost her initially among the group, but luckily they spotted her again and restrained him with the seal rescue net. The first few strands could be cut easily, but the majority of the net was caught around the seal's mouth, a dangerous spot for the rescuers to work. They have enough experience by now and understand the dangers, and they know how to handle the seal. They patiently removed string after string, and the seal seemed to understand that the rescuers were not doing any harm. Once she was released after the rescue, she was "jumping for joy" and ran back into the ocean. 🦭
