Ovechkin's "Hot Stick" Game (3/19/2009)

March 19, 2009 - Entering his 70th game of the season, Alex Ovechkin sought to become just the third player to ever score 50 goals in 3 of their first 4 seasons. The Capitals faced off with the 29th-place Tampa Bay Lightning, and it didn't take long for the Great 8 to find the back of the net. Less than 8 minutes into the game during 4-on-4 action, Ovechkin took a pass from Nicklas Backstrom and skated up the right wing, unleashing a wrist shot from the top of the right circle that beat Mike McKenna clean. In celebration, Ovechkin put his stick on the ice and pretended to warm his hands over the "hot stick". The infamous celebration quickly drew the ire of some hockey commentators, most famously Don Cherry. Adding 2 assists later in the game, the performance would become one of his most notable from his 2nd-straight MVP season.
