The anterior tibial artery originates from the popliteal artery and passes between the tibia and fibula through an oval opening at the superior aspect of the interosseus membrane. The artery then descends between the tibialis anterior and extensor digitorum longus muscles. Just above the talocrural joint and in front of the lower extremity of the tibia from the anterior tibial artery arises the anterior medial malleolar artery and the anterior lateral maleolar artery. After gives off these branches the anterior tibial artery becomes the dorsal pedis artery which is directed towards the proximal end of the first intermetatarsal space.
