At the inferior margin of popliteus muscle, the popliteal artery splits into posterior tibial artery and the anterior tibial artery which leaves the posterior compartment of leg after passes though an opening in the superior part of the interosseous membrane.
Soon after its origin the posterior tibial artery gives the fibular artery, therefore the posterior tibial artery proximal to the fibular artery origin is sometimes called the tibiofibular trunk.
