Childbirth: Protecting Your Pelvic Floor | Duke Health

The pelvic floor is made up of muscles, ligaments, and connective tissue that support your bladder, bowel, and uterus. A lot can happen to the pelvic area during pregnancy. Hormonal changes loosen the muscles and put pressure on your bladder. Kegel exercises can restrengthen those muscles. During childbirth, the tissue between your vagina and anus can tear. Massaging this area with your finger can help prevent the tear from happening. Learning to relax your pelvic floor muscles for delivery by doing deep squats is also helpful to ease the baby’s progress during the delivery.
